Mt. Greylock, Massachusetts (3,491') September 5, 2010

After a good nights rest and Stephenie acting as navigator, we found our way to the highpoint of Massachusetts, Mt. Greylock. Greylock is located in the Berkshire Mountains, and is the highest mountain in Massachusetts. At 3,491 feet, Greylock makes up for its short stature with remarkable beauty. It is one of the most scenic mountains in the Eastern United States. It is so inspirational that legend has it, Mount Greylock's long, saddle-like shape inspired Herman Melville to write "Moby Dick".

It is quite an impressive site given that is rises nearly 2,700 feet above the surrounding. Although there are several hiking trails, we had some ground to cover and opted to drive to the top. Another highly developed highpoint, a large tower is situated at the summit. Although not as tall as the tower in NJ, this one was much more decorative.

We were fortunate enough to get there early and avoid the majority of the crowds. Although there were quite a few hikers in the area, I didn't see any appilationa trail "through hikers" despite the fact the Appilation Trail passes over Greylock. It must have been too late in the season. I was very pleased with the views and glad to enjoy a hike free highpoint before a much longer hike tomorrow in VT.
